Community batteries webinar
In Australia, there is currently considerable interest in community batteries, and a number of installations are now providing initial results. Community batteries can provide benefits to individual customers and to the network services, and are likely to encourage more solar installations on homes.
Mitchell Community Energy conducted a webinar that brought together national experts to explain how community batteries work, where they have been installed or planned, models of ownership and management, and the economic and social benefits and costs of providing and operating them. It was an important webinar for communities across Australia at this time of rapid change in our energy system.

Power co-operative established
Mitchell Community Energy Co-operative was established at a lively public meeting at WineXSam in Seymour on Tuesday evening. The co-operative was formed by Mitchell Community Energy Inc. to enable the local community to invest in a large solar installation on the Seymour Sports and Aquatic Centre.
Jeff Wilmot, secretary of Mitchell Community Energy Inc. said “Council is currently considering a proposal from us to obtain funding from the community for a project that would save ratepayers considerable operating expenses of the large municipal asset.”
“We considered various options and experience elsewhere and decided that a co-operative was the most appropriate structure to provide this funding. It enables local people to invest in a good local project, and to be provided with an opportunity to be involved in its administration. Co-operatives have a very good track record in rural enterprises.”
Peter Lockyer, president of Mitchell Community Energy Inc. said he hoped Council would support this local initiative as it could lead to other similar projects that would not only provide cheaper power, but also important environmental benefits. He said that MCE brought together significant expertise to help other local organisations with renewable energy projects.
The meeting elected six directors of the co-operative, namely Peter Lockyer, Jeff Wilmot, Barbara Moss, Louise Byrne, Robert Adams and Brad Giblin.
